The Green Environment Fund

The Green Environment Fund (GEF) is a joint venture between ACBP, the Nathan Cummings Foundation, Morning Star Foundation, and the New Israel Fund. Guided by humanitarian and Jewish values, these foundations have joined to leverage and promote their vision for an environmentally sustainable Israel. GEF aims to place the issues of environment, social justice and quality of life at the top of the social agenda in Israel, and involve civil society in these issues, thereby influencing government policies. The driving principles underlying GEF include safeguarding Israel's natural resources, preventing environmental degradation, and protecting citizens from environmental dangers, including those living in Israel's most vulnerable communities.

GEF strives towards the development of a strong and highly professional environmental movement and an active, knowledgeable public. GEF makes small grants to grassroots organizations and coordinates coalitions between them when appropriate. When the need is much larger and the intervention of the major environmental organizations is necessary, GEF makes larger grants. Thus, the Fund is involved in timely environmental debates including: Dead Sea/Red Sea and other water issues; the Ramot Hovav toxic wastes; the separation fence in Wadi Kelt; air pollution, open spaces, transportation, and more. GEF has distributed more than 7 million dollars during the six years of its functioning.
